Paul Saba was born and raised in Lachine, Quebec, Canada where he currently practices family medicine both in the community and in the hospital. For the past 10 years he has been President of the local council of physicians, dentists, and pharmacists at the Lachine Hospital which is part of the McGill University Health Center. However, his medical journey has taken him far from his native Quebec. After finishing medical school at McGill University in 1980, he settled near Boston, where he continued his training, first at Framingham Union Hospital and then worked on staff at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In 1992, he served as attending physician for the emergency and surgery department of Duke University’s Medical Centre in North Carolina. Two years later, he was off to the Ivory Coast where he headed up a community health project for CAUSE Canada. He has also done volunteer medical work in Somalia, Bangladesh, Haiti, and Honduras. Back in Canada since 1998, Dr. Paul Saba has dedicated himself to many community and social causes as co-founder and co-president of the Coalition of Physicians for Social Justice. His public advocacy has included promoting free medications for the poor, nutritional support for the elderly, greater accessibility to health care, and supporting local community hospitals. He also served in many rural emergency rooms when there was a medical shortage. Presently he is involved in a 3 year court battle opposed to the Quebec and Canadian laws on euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Dr. Saba’s dual Canadian and US citizenships, and international experience provides him a special vantage point to explain the extreme dangers of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide.
