Brian E. Hurley is a Cleveland native who currently serves as Of Counsel for the Cincinnati, Ohio law firm of Schroeder, Maundrell, Barbiere & Powers.  For the 26 years prior to joining SMB&P in 2014, Mr. Hurley had been a managing partner of another law firm, and, between 2001 and 2004, he was also the First Assistant of the Hamilton County, Ohio Prosecutor’s Office.  Mr. Hurley maintains both a litigation and a consultant/expert witness practice that includes providing representation and advice to clients and legislators on pro-life and child abuse matters, as well as on the enforcement of legal duties owed by abortion providers and pregnancy centers.  As part of his practice, Mr. Hurley has represented clients in litigation against Planned Parenthood involving their claims that the organization breached its statutory duties under Ohio’s child abuse reporting and abortion parental notification and informed consent statutes.

Mr. Hurley, who is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbel Law Directory, has been recognized by Law & Politics and his colleagues as an Ohio “Super Lawyer” (2004-2016), a “Top 50 Lawyer” in Cincinnati (2007-2016), and a “Top 100 Lawyer” in Ohio (2007-2016)He has also been recognized in the Cincinnati Business Courier and Cincy Magazine as one of Southwest Ohio’s top attorneys.  In 2016 Mr. Hurley received a Lifetime Achievement Award from America’s Top 100 Attorneys as one of Ohio’s top 100 attorneys.

In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Hurley serves or has served as a member of the Cincinnati Zoo’s finance committee, an adjunct professor for the University of Cincinnati College of Law and Northern Kentucky University, a basketball and mock trial coach and Booster Club officer for Cincinnati St. Xavier High School, a legal and financial advisor for his parish, an advisor to Pregnancy Center West (Cincinnati) and Cincinnati Right To Life, and scout for the Oakland Raiders.  Mr. Hurley is also co-sponsor of Hackers for the Hungry, an annual golf outing, to raise money that is used to build homes and support an orphanage in Haiti.

For his work involving pro-life and religious liberty issues, Mr. Hurley has received the Life Legal Defense Foundation’s National Lawyer of the Year Award (2008), Cincinnati Right to Life’s Hero for Life Award (2010), and the Alliance Defending Freedom’s Silver Service Award (2013, for over 5000 pro bono hours).  He has also received the Cincinnati Friars Club’s Friars Award (2011) and Cleveland St. Ignatius High School’s Cardinal Robert J. Bellarmine, S.J. Award (2015) for his work with at-risk children in Cincinnati, his efforts to raise money to build homes and support disabled and abandoned children in Haiti, and his service to St. Ignatius.

Mr. Hurley is a graduate of John Carroll University (1976 B.A., summa cum laude), the Ohio State College of Law (1979 J.D., with honors) and Xavier University (1989 M.S., summa cum laude).  He and his wife, Monica, have been married for 38 years, and they have three children and six grandchildren.
